Match 5: Tommy Jones & Jason Couch (USA) vs  Mika Koivuneimi & Dom Barrett (EUR)

Another tied game. A split in the 3rd from for the Americans gave Mika and Dom an opportunity to take the game, but you can't ever write off Tommy and Jason, they came back and struck out from the 6th, focing the Europeans into a tie. They then repeat frames 9 and 10 - but... another tie. A second tie break repeat of frame 10 finally decided the game with the Europeans taking a hard fought game to lead 6-5.

Session 3 - Sat, 19:00

Match 1: Tommy Jones (USA) vs Tore Torgersen (EUR)

After a strong team talk by Tim Mack in the interval, the USA came out firing on all cylinders.  On any other day the first eight in a row and a 268 could win a game but not today and not when the USA's Tommy Jones blasted all 12 strikes for a perfect 300 to send the crowd delirious. The score now stands at 7-6 to Europe.

Match 4: Pete Weber (USA) vs Paul Moor (EUR)

It's all USA now as they step up a gear with Chris Barnes shooting 267 to Dominic Barrett's 238, Dom's had an amazing year but he just had no real answer to the class of Barnes who always looks so smooth at Barnsley and has become a crowd favourite.

Sunday

Session 4 - Sunday, 13:30:

Match 1 - Chris Barnes & Tommy Jones (USA) vs Osku Palermaa & Dom Barrett (EUR)

Heart-stopping stuff this afternoon, especially when it looked like a double 300 for starters, so the pressure on the bowlers in the tenth frame must have been tremendous. Uncharacteristically, Palermaa was the first to crack, leaving the 2-4-5-8 for Barrett to convert. Then Barnes was denied completing a perfect game with Jones by leaving the 10-pin. Bowl 286 and lose? That will be remembered for decades.

Match 2 - Jason Couch (USA) vs Mika Koivuniemi (EUR)

Glum-looking situation for the European team now as the Americans only need five more points to clinch the 2008 title. The pendulum has certainly swung in favour of the stars and stripes and the team is incredibly enthusiastic, carrying on with their crest of a wave attitude brought about after a strict lecture by their captain Tim Mack yesterday evening.
One outstanding facet of this year's lane installation is the fantastic carry of the corner pins, late 7s and 10s turning spares into strikes and therefore leading to incredible scores. USA now lead by four points 12-8.

Match 3 - Pete Weber & Tim Mack (USA) vs Paul Moor & Tore Torgersen (EUR)

Back to a glimmer of hope for Europe as the Moor/Torgersen combo trounced Weber and Mack. The Americans got off to a bad start when Weber left the 'Greek Church', the 4-6-7-9-10 and then the 2-4-8-10 in the ninth frame. For a moment, it looked as though the Americans would not have a 200 game but a tenth frame finish brought them one pin over par.
Just a 10-pin in the eighth frame robbed Europe of a perfect game, but the doubles team was delighted with a 279. The capacity crown certainly showed their appreciation for a much needed European point.

Match 4 - Tommy Jones (USA) vs Osku Palermaa (EUR)

"Not a high scoring match but gripping stuff," remarked talented TV commentator Nick Halling. He was right and it was a tense moment when Osku Palermaa stood on the approach in the tenth frame knowing that he had to strike. Alas, the European captain left the 2-8 and once again the Americans notched a victory.
Things looked good for Palermaa when Jones left the 7-10 split in his seventh frame but he failed to capitalize on the situation and apply the noose. Four points needed for USA, eight for Europe - short odds for the visitors from afar.

Match 5 - Pete Weber & Chris Barnes (USA) vs Mika Koivuniemi & Dom Barrett (EUR)

Pete Weber has produced some extraordinary splits this afternoon, but he capped them all by leaving the 3-4-6-7 in the fourth frame but the loss of pinfall points did not matter all that much with the Europeans enjoying a strikefest for a very nice 279, their second of the day.

BAKER TEAM

A surprising double split leave by European lead-off Dominic Barrett put the team in arrears. Kouveniemi stood in the tenth frame needing to strike twice to clinch a Baker win but it was not to be. Now the Americans need just three wins to take the Weber Cup for the sixth time.

Event Details

THE 9th ANNUAL PartyCasino.com Weber Cup gets underway this Friday, 3rd October, as two five-man teams representing the USA and Europe do battle in tenpin bowling’s annual 'Ryder Cup'.

weber3.jpg

For the first time, legendary American bowler Pete Weber will make his debut in the event, a tournament named after his late father Dick.

Weber, 45, has never represented his country in the annual USA v Europe tenpin bowling competition before, but will get his opportunity when the two five-man teams meet at the Barnsley Metrodome.

Pete Weber has won more than 30 titles on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour in the United States and is something of a maverick in the bowling world but his tournament record, and over $3 million in prize money, speak for themselves.

2007_1021weberk0261.jpgThe St Louis based Weber will be joined by three of last year’s victorious side – Chris Barnes, Tommy Jones and captain Tim Mack, while left-hander Jason Couch, a winner in 2006, is also among the five.

The Metrodome has successfully hosted this competition and the World Tenpin Masters since 2005 and has established itself as the home of British tenpin bowling.

October sees the ninth time the Weber Cup has been held and America have won it five times, compared to three from Europe.

2007_1021weberj0234.jpgThe 2007 event was one of the most exciting ever as Europe led 14-10 and 15-12 in the race to 17 before the USA won five points in a row to take the trophy 17-15.

Europe will also have a player making his debut as England’s Dominic Barrett, ranked fourth on the EBT rankings and a winner at the World Youth Championships, gets his chance to play at the Weber Cup.

He is joined by countryman Paul Moor, Finnish duo of Mika Koivuniemi and Osku Palermaa, who assumes the captain’s role, and Norway’s Tore Torgersen.

The Weber Cup will be staged over five sessions – Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 2pm and 7pm and Sunday at 1.30pm and 6.30pm.

All the action will be screened live in the UK and Ireland on Sky Sports Xtra or on Sky Sports Xtra’s Interactive Service.

The matches will also be produced by Matchroom Sport into 18 x one hour programmes, which will be distributed and shown around the world.
