Nicole Sanders defeats Rebecka Larsen to win the 2009 European Women's Masters

The fifth European Women’s Masters was hosted by a new location this year in Barcelona, the Baix bowling center in the suburb of Saint Vincenc dels Horts. This homely 12-lane, AMF equipped centre is run by Carlos Marti, a warm host known well for his past management of previous home centre, Bowling Pedralbes.

This year there were nine international champions invited to the event, all seeded into the final day of competition. The remaining field fought for 15 places in the final through six qualifying games with a maximum of two re-entries permitted.

The tournament opened on October 8th with four qualifying squads and the final day encompassed those 15 qualifiers and the nine invitees for two six-game blocks to select the top four for the televised semi-finals and final, both contested over best of three games.

Luz Adriana Leal from Bogota, Colombia topped the qualifying standings with a very healthy 1,313 over the six games on what was a challenging lane pattern. That score won her €300 as the highest primary entry and the same amount for the top re-entry score was taken by Rebecka Larsen of Gothenburg, Sweden with her score of 1,283.

Players invited by the tournament organizers: Kirsten Penny, England; Kamilla Kjeldsen, Denmark; Bettina Lund, Denmark; Britt Bröndsted, Denmark; Nina Flack, Sweden; Nicole Sanders, The Netherlands; Sue Abela, Malta; Mónica Boldó, Catalonia and Clara Guerrero, Colombia joined the fray for the final day and the field of 24 set out on the route to the top four.

The morning featured the first six games and the highlight of this performance was a perfect game, the first by a woman at Baix Bowling, by Nicole Sanders, waiting until the sixth game to perform that feat. She topped the leader board with a huge 1,440, hitting just one game sub-200, a 193, to be 64 pins clear of second-placed Sue Abela of Malta, the lady who has set so many record in the Mediterranean Challenge Cup over the past 15 years. Joline Persson of Sweden held third and defending champion Kirsten Penny of England occupied that vital fourth place.
At the completion of twelve games the top four positions for the semi-finals were settled. Nicole Sanders and Sue Abela held the top two places, Sweden’s Rebecka Larsen climbed to third, thanks to games of 246, 247 and 279 as openers for the second block, and Danish champion Britt Brondsted denied Nina Flack and Kirsten Penny of chances of further glory.

Into the best of three game televised and web streamed (www.tbowling.cat ) semi-finals with Sanders matched against Brondsted and Abela versus Larsen.

samaranchcup.jpg
ETBF president Addie Opehelders presented Samaranch Cup to Joline Persson
Sanders booked her place in the final with a quick two-game defeat of her Danish opponent, 267-211 and 248-212.

A different picture on the other pair of lanes as the match went the distance, Larsen coming through, 181-163, 212-232 and 172-158 to walk to lanes 7-8 for the final against Sanders.

It was a nervous start for both girls, perhaps not too accustomed to the TV lights, still and mobile cameramen and quite a crowd of enthusiastic supporters.

Sanders set the pace with a good line to the pocket whilst Larsen went fishing for strikes. First game to Sanders, 191-169, the scores looking closer than the actual match.
Could Sanders settle the match for the title, bringing her joy but disappointing the spectators enjoying a feast of good bowling and hoping for three games?

Well, yes, she could. Scores improved a little for a 205-173 victory for Sanders but much sorrow for Larsen who just could not get those vital strikes, even though she was so accurate with converting her spares.

“It was tough out there today,” commented the new champion. “The oil was moving around because of the TV lights, but I found my way and won it. I started the second game with a split, strike and another split, so I decided to play further outside on the lane and got back into the pocket. I was really nervous in the second game, when I had those splits, so was worried that Larsen would catch me. But it all worked out well in the end.”

For those competitors under the age of 20, past IOC president Samaranch has sponsored an annual trophy. This year that was won, along with €1,000 by Joline Persson of Sweden with Diana Zavjalova of Latvia second and Bianca wiekeraad of the Netherlands third, taking €700 and €500 respectively.

This tournament, along with the Catalonia Open and Barcelona Open, is promoted and run by the Catalonian Bowling Federation which seems to have more enthusiasm for the sport than most of the European associations.

European Tenpin Bowling Federation (ETBF) president Addie Ophelders acknowledged their efforts in his speech at the presentations, saying: “I could talk about this tournament for at least an hour. My heart is bouncing for what the Catalan Federation has done yet again. This is an example for the rest of the world and I wish that many other countries would take note of this incredible promotion.”

The outstanding efforts by the Catalan Federation’s president, Joan Ricart and secretary Clara Roca and their staff ensure a smooth running and well organized series of excellent tournaments that should be copied world-wide.

Final standings (top 12 of 24): 1. Nicole Sanders, Netherlands €3,500; 2. Rebecka Larsen, Sweden €2,000; 3-4, €1,000 each: Britt Brondsted, Denmark; Sue Abela, Malta; 5. Nina Flack, Sweden €900; 6. Kirsten Penny, England €800; 7. Clara Guerrero, Colombia €700; 8. Margarita Roa, Colombia €600; 9-12, €500 each: 9. Sarit Mirzahi, Israel; 10. Kamilla Kjeldsen, Denmark; 11. Joline Persson, Sweden; 12. Luz Adriana Leal, Colombia.

SOME BIG GUNS COME TO TOWN
(Friday 9th October)

After the squad of local bowlers had their session last night, many well-known stars of the lanes came into the competition on Friday afternoon and the lucky nine invitees will come on board tomorrow morning.

In competition right now are famed players along the lines of Rebecka Larsen and Eva Jonsson from Sweden, Ghislaine van der Tol and Bianca Wikeraad from Holland, to name just a few.

The lanes are conditioned to 40 feet and there is a good ball reaction for the girls, so competition is going to be tough.

adriana_luz_leal.jpg
Adriana Luz Leal (Colombia)
With high games of 268 and 258, Adriana Luz Leal from Bogota, Colombia blitzed the Baix Bowling lanes to lead the second squad with 1313, surely enough to make the finals tomorrow.

Last night it was Margarita Roa, also from Colombia, who was the squad leader, but Leal outpaced her fellow countrywoman with games of 209, 191, 268, 221, 258 and 166 for her 1313 total, eight pins better than second-placed Bianca Wikeraad of the Netherlands.

The top 15 players after the five qualifying squads will advance to tomorrow's televised finals. The current score for that cut is 1153, held by petite Cheska tomas of the Netherlands.

There will also be CatTV live web streaming on www.tbowling.cat

Luz is enjoying just her second trip to Europe, having been Colombia's representative in the World Ranking Masters in Naples, Italy last April. "I really love being in Europe and would very much like to live over here for a while," she told us. "I especially like Barcelona, it is such a beautiful city."

LAST CHANCE SALOON
(Friday 9th October)

rebecka_larsen.jpg
Rebecka Larsen (Sweden)

Twenty-four hardy souls signed up for the final qualifying squad, some hoping to make the cut, others trying to defend their position in the elite if they think there's a chance they can be knocked out of the running.

The 15 in the top group will be joined by the nine invited by the Catalan Bowling Federation and that group kick off the day with six games at 09:00 and a further six at 13:30. Local channel TV3 and CatTV will set up to screen the final rounds during the break between these two squads.

The top four players will contest a best of three game semi-final and the two victors from that do the same again for the final. All those games can be seen live on www.tbowling.cat through the CatTV link although there is the warning that most of the commentary will be in Catalan with the occasional English aside when I can get a word in edgeways.

Rebecka Larsen from Gothenburg, Sweden (pictured) topped this squad with 1,296, her second entry in this, her first time in the European Women's Masters. "I think this is a great tournament," she remarked after the squad, "and I enjoyed bowling very much."

Fellow Swede Eva Jonsson was 14th after Squad 3, so bowled again, thinking she was going for the drop. Fortunately, she held 15th place.

FINAL - BLOCK 1 (6 GAMES)
(Saturday 10th October)

Main qualifiers 1-15 are now joined by the nine top bowlers invited to the Masters by the tournament committee for two blocks of six games. The top four on total pinfall will advance to the stepladder finals played over the best of three games inn both semi-finals and final.

kirsten_penny_ewm2009.jpg
Kirsten Penny (England) - Defending Champion
Defending champion is Kirsten Penny of England (pictured left) and, coming off winning the European Champion's Cup in Crete last month, is a firm favourite to take the title again this year.

sandersperfect.jpg
Nicole Sanders (Netherlands) - 300 Game
Highlight of the first six game block was a perfect game from the talented hands of Dutch lefty Nicole Sanders (pictured right). She left it until the sixth game to round off the squad with twelve great strikes and the fifth 300 game of her illustrious career

Sanders is the number one going into the second block of six games, holding a very respectable 64 point buffer over second placed Sue Abela of Malta with 1,440.

Defending champion Kirsten Penny is currently fourth. "I started with a couple of bad games," she reported, which was true. Unusually she hit the lanes with 195 and 170 before getting into her stride with four good 200-plus games and a low of 228.

No change in the top two positions after the field complete nine of the twelve games but a remarkable climb from tenth to third by Rebecka Larsen of Sweden, who opened the second block with the three game total of 772.

And so it came to pass that four countries would be represented in the upcoming semi-finals, Netherlands, Malta, Sweden and Denmark, with lady 300 Nicole Sanders leading the table and itching to take on Britt Brondsted for a place in the final.

Match 2 will be between Malta’s Sue Abela against Rebecka Larsen of Sweden, no relation to Martin Larsen, we’re told.

Things stayed pretty much the same through the second block and the four for the finals was set before the final game, barring absolute disasters.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Clara Guerrero didn’t make the top quartet after being fancied as the ultimate champion. Coming off gold medals in World Championships and bronze in the recent American Zone Championships, she was expected to dominate the tournament. However, it was not to be.
