plaza.pngbec_2010_podium.jpgSo could Rob Thurlby beat another Malaysian to win the 2010 Brunswick Euro Challenge that was the question as he went up against Adrian Ang. Ang Opened with a spare and strike as Thurlby doubled. Frame three and the Englishman added another for a turkey with Ang also striking for a double. The Malaysian then struck again for a turkey as he looked to pull pins back on Thurlby who smashed in a fourbagger to keep his distance and hold a slight lead. Frame five and Thurbly leaves a six count and spared giving the Malaysian a chance which Ang took as he added another strike for a fourbagger.

Onto frame six and Ang is at it again blasting in another strike for five in a row and heaping the pressure on the Englishman.Thurlby cool as ever steps up and strikes. Frame seven and Thurlby needed to keep striking which he did and added a double as Malaysian Ang finally felt the pressure and could only spare. Frame eight saw Ang back on strike as Thurlby also struck to close the gap and give himself a chance to regain the lead. Frame nine and Thurlby shoots another for a

fourbagger and seven pin lead withthe Malaysian also striking for a double. Brunswick could not have dreamed of a better final as both players really went for it and in the tenth and final frame Angcould only spare and strike for 248 and Thurlby rounded out with nine spare and eight count and a 253. Rob Thurlby wins the 2010 Brunswick Euro Challenge.

Stepladder Match 1

Malaysian Zulmazran Zulkifli went up against Venezuelan Ildemaro Ruiz in the first stepladder match and both players started with a turkey, Ruiz was the first to falter shooting a nine spare in frame four as Zulkifli continued to strike. Ruiz then opened in frame five as Zulkifli spared. In frame six it looked like things might change as Ruiz struck and Zulkifli spared then Ruiz added another for a double to pull some pins back on the Malaysian who also struck in the seventh frame but another open in frame eight for the Venezuelan gave Zulmazran a bigger lead as he struck again. The Malaysian then opened in the ninth frame and the gap could have been closed to just eight pins if Ruiz could hit strikes in the ninth and tenth. The Venezuelan star struck in the ninth to give himself some hope but could only manage a six spare and strike to round out for a 201 game leaving the Malaysian needing just two pins for the win. Zulkifli ended with three strikes for 230 and a convincing win on paper.

The semifinal was to be between Malaysian Zulmazran Zulkifli and Englishman Rob Thurlby, Both players opened with a strike in frame one but a spare by the Malaysian in frame two gave Thurlby a chance to take an early lead which he took by striking again. Frame three and a six spare for the Englishman but Zulkifli could only spare also and Thurlby took a seven pin lead. A strike in the fourth frame for Zulkifli was cancelled out by one from the englishman as both looked to string as many strikes together as they could. Frame five and Thurlby added the pressure by striking again for a double leaving the Malaysian needing to double also which he couldnt do leaving a single pin and sparing. Zulmazran then added a strike in the six frame but so did Rob and stretched his lead with a turkey. By now the tall Englishman was flying and added another strike for a fourbagger and it was looking bad for the Malaysian who opened with a six split and took only two pins. Frame eight and it could be all but over if the Englishman could strike but first up was the Zulkifli who again could only manage a spare as Thurlby left and eight count and spared and at this point had a 49 pin lead. Frame nine and the Englishman was back on strike and it was all but over for the Malaysian who could only spare again. Kulkifli then struck out in the tenth frame for 194 but it was too little too late as Thurlby ended with a nine spare nine and 233 game.
