The 4th stop on the ISBT attracted 93 men and 25 women to Belgium for the 1st Flanders Senior Open. Scoring was high from the start, with four 300 games recorded throughout the tournament for Andre Geelen (BEL) Michel Perniaux (BEL) Leif Sjöberg (SWE) and John Bosch (NED.

Qualifying was over two 6 game blocks, with re-entries allow to replace the lowest of the first two entries. After four days of qualifying, the men's section was led by Olle Svensson on a 244 average, with local bowler Chris Van Damme just a few pins behind. The top four would go straight to the finals, the first two being joined by Andre Geelen and Yves Van Damme. In the women's section, Liliane Vintens and Lena Sulkanen went straight through. The unluckiest bowler of the week was Keith Howes, who hurt his arm during practice, and had to retire without posting a score.

Saturday evening brought the desperado, with four men and two women progressing. In the Women's section, Kaz Barfoot was the only UK player to make it through.

An early Sunday morning start saw 32 men and 12 women bowl a further 4 games to remain in contention. In the women's section, Angie Brown led the way, averaging 222, with Kaz Barfoot making good use of the desperado qualification to make the round robin final. The top 16 men bowled a further 3 games, with Ron Oldfield then being top of the list.

There then followed an 8 person round robin round, to win a place in the stepladder finals. In the men's section, Chris Van Damme (BEL) narrowly missed out on the all important 3rd place, with Andre Geelan (BEL), Barry Horne (USA) and Ron Oldfield (ENG) making it through. In the women's section, Christel Carlsson (SWE) won the top spot, followed by Angie Brown (ENG) and Liliane Vintens (BEL)
